Steps for Applying to College

Make a list of college you want to apply (www.bigfuture.collegeboard.org)

Decide where you want to apply and which portal is best to use…Common App, CFNC, school website (www.commonapp.org, www.cfnc.org)  For Common App and CFNC, you will need to make an account.  Be sure to put your login information in your phone or in a safe place to use later.

Complete the Residency Determination Service Application-RDS (www.ncresidency.org)  You will need the RCN number for your application.

Consider writing a resume to be able to give teachers or your counselor when asking for letters of recommendation for college or scholarships.  There are lots of resume examples on the internet.  Allow teachers and your counselor plenty of time to write letters of recommendation.  Not all schools require letters of recommendation.

Begin to work on applications and essays.  Have someone proofread your essays.

Take the SAT or ACT if planning to submit test scores.  Most schools are still test optional.  Check your school’s website to be sure.

Be mindful of deadlines.  When is the Early Action deadline for your school?

Free college application week is October 16-20.  Application fees are waived for select colleges and universities.  You must apply through CFNC.org  to get the fee waived.

You will need to request to have your transcript sent to the colleges you have applied to.  Please make the request through Community Christian’s website.  If you are using Common App, then it will prompt you to add your counselor’s email address…[email protected].  Mrs. Lyndon will then get an email to upload your transcript.

CCP transcripts will need to be sent at the end of the school year.  A few schools may ask for them when you apply.  You can request the transcript through Wilson Community Colleges website.

FAFSA opens December 1, 2023.  This is the way to apply for financial aid.

Seek scholarships.  See Scholarship page for a list of scholarship search engines.
