English & History Merger Book Report/Application Questions
The most important thing one can do for their education is to read, read and read. We highly encourage our students to read as much as possible. To encourage at-home education, AR has become extra credit. In the spirit of reading and learning during our at-home education, Middle School English and History have teamed up for the remaining portion of the school year. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Dumond have selected middle grade level books from the time frames that each grade studied in history class this year. These books were available for purchase or borrow at retailers, libraries and e-readers that were still open during the first week in April. During this time, things seem to be changing rapidly, so we would like you to use this list as more or less of a guide. You are not stuck to books on this list, but may choose something different. If you need help, please contact either of us.

Essay:
Once you have completed the chapter you will complete a 3-5 paragraph essay. It may be hand-written or typed and emailed. Please turn in by 3/20.
What forced the writing of the Constitution? Who were the main authors? Why did they set up a republic instead of a democracy? What are the three branches and their roles as established in the Constitution?
*Extra Credit Option: The Crisis by Thomas Paine has been extended until April 3rd*

Essay:

Choose one of the following (you may complete a second one for extra credit)
1. Why do you think George Washington became such a distinguished and respected president in American history? What precedents did he set that still apply today?
2. What were the Alien and Sedition Acts? What made them so dangerous?
DID YOU KNOW THAT CH8 was the last thing we needed to do for the 7th grade year? COVID didn't mess us up here!
WORK FOR 3/31-4/8
For these last two weeks before Easter Break, you will be completing two "projects". These can be completed in any order. Please try to have all three completed (or memorized) by 4/8.

Project 1: Memorize the Preamble
We already were planning fo this one, but I was REALLY hoping to be back in the classroom for it. Alas, we're not.
1. Memorize the preamble to the constitution.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
2. Then record yourself saying it and send it to me. Voila! Easy peasy!
Project 2: Create an Amendment Plaque
What you'll need:
- 1 piece (minimum) of construction sized paper (8 1/2 x 11 inches)
- Glue
- scissors
- markers, sharpies, colored pencils, etc.
- images (printed or drawn)
- art supplies in general
How to do it:
- Choose your favorite amendment to the constitution.
- Put it on the construction paper in a decorative way. You may include pictures, info graphics, etc. You do NOT need to write the entire amendment on the plaque (you might not have enough space...) but the gist or main ideas should be visible.
- Lastly, explain why you chose this one. Why is it your favorite? What did you learn from it?
Why not have some good 'ole art fun? Go outside and do this!
Hang it up on the fridge!

The Crisis by Thomas Paine (First Paragraph)
This will count as extra credit, wherever you may need it most.
Several of you had already started this! Finish memorizing this great piece of American Literature and record yourself reciting it. Then send it to me. Make yo mama, proud!
Remember this is the pamphlet that encouraged Patriots to keep pushing through the long War for Independence. If it wasn't for this we may not have kept the spirits to keep fighting.
The Crisis
by Thomas Paine
December 23, 1776
THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but "to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER" and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong only to God.
